About Our Allied Institution's
Institution was founded so far back as 1856 by the Honourable Sir A. Seshayya Sastriar, K.C.S.I., of Kumbakonam, the Well-known statesman of Southern India, who was then holding the Office of the Collector’s Huzur Sheristadar, which was then a high and influential Office, and was a resident of this Town for about a decade and a half He was an eye-witness of the numerous Conversions – that were being made by the enterprising agents of the Church Mission Society, who had by that time firmly established themselves in the town and its surroundings, and were successfully managing a large and well-equipped school of their own to serve as an effective instrument for compassing their ends. The Chruch Mission School, as it was then called, had been already in existence here for about thirteen years, and was presided over by the Rev. R. T. Noble, a disting- uished evangelist and one of the most successful Christian Missionaries the East, and one who possessed, from influence all accounts, an uncommon over his pupils. The painful sight of a large number of young and promising youths of high caste and respectable families being turned away year after year from their ancestral faith, deeply affected the tender heart of Mr. Seshayya Sastriar, and in one or two instances, he is said to have been instrumental in saving the misguided youths from But he their impending conversions.

in was not satisfied with such isolated and precarious attempts at rescuing them. Astute and far-sighted as he was even then, he clearly saw that the only effective remedy for such a sad state of things was to provide the Hindu Community with a well equi- pped school of their own where their children might prosecute their studies safe from any interference with their religion. In order to carry out his idea, he negotiated with a young and energetic school master, Sri Munzaluru Purushottam Garu, who was successfully managing at that time a small private school of his own, and persuaded him to hand- over his school. Having thus provided himself with the necessary materials, Mr.Seshiah Sastry started his new school on 1st of January 1856. 3

under the designation of the “Hindu Anglo Vernacular School” a name which it retained for many years till it was changed to the “Hindu High School” in the year 1863. Its First Head Master was Mr. Taylor, an Englishman. The school was affiliated to the Madras University and it presented its first batch of students for Matriculation Examination of the Madras University.
Very little is known about the school for the first six or seven years’ of its existence. It seems to have been located in private houses in several parts of the town and it does not appear to have risen beyond the Lower Secondary level. It had neither a decent building to occupy, nor an adequate staff to man it, and by 1862, the affairs of the School came to such a pass that most men despaired of its very existence. At this juncture Sir Seshaiah Sastriar was transferred from Machilipatnam and it was feared that the School might not survive.
The year 1863 was indeed a memor- able year in the history of the school in more ways than one. The Managing committee was singularly fortunate in having secured for their President, a very able, energitic and enthusiastic supporter of the cause of native education. This was Sri Mungamuri Narasimham Pantulu who was then Treasury Deputy Collector of this place, a man of indo- mitable courage and great force of will to whom the school owes more to anybody else, before or after him.
